Bridging Social Capital and ICT
Posted by Gary on April 5, 2006
There does not appear to be any research on the use of ICT to support bridging social capital. I Know from informal discussions with web connect users that this takes place but how can you measure it. Also there is massive discussion about social cohesion. Anyone know any research that exists uses ICT in order to improve social cohesion. Some of the wok that MCIN does around developing web based content is promoting social cohesion look at our community media stuff. How can we measure this?

there was a housing association down south that set up a commuity IT network between its blocks of flats which led to increased communication and cohesion. Can’t remember where it was now but one of the London boroughs I think. Worth checking on renewal.net website for more of this kind of thing…

Emma,
Thanks for the comment. I’ll check on the renewal site. There is a similar project based in Liverpool called tenant spin that has done something similar. It is running web based tv to all the flats and has residents produce programs. There is another project in Hulme in Manchester called Redbricks which has wired up it flats but I am not sure what content they produce.
